Matthew 12:46-50 God’s Family
Jesus is using family ties that we know well in order to teach us about spiritual ties that we do not know unless God reveals them to us.
I. The family is vitally important to God.
A. He created man, woman and children.
Genesis 1:27-28; Psalm 127:3
B. He gave us the fifth commandment.
Exodus 20:12; Ephesians 6:4.
C. His law has much to teach about family life.
Leviticus 19:3
D. His Proverbs teach much about family life.
Proverbs 1:7-8
E. He often uses family images to teach us spiritual
truths.

II. God gave Jesus a human family in the world.
Hebrews 2:14
A. Mother and father and brothers and sisters.

B. Jesus is God’s only-begotten Son.

C. Jesus loved and respected his family in the world.
John 19:26-27
III. God adopts a family from the world.
A. He adopts his family through Jesus his Son.
Galatians 4:4-5; Romans 8:29; Hebrews 2:11; Gal 3:26
B. he adopts his family by means of faith and obedience.
John 6:40; Luke 1:38; Galatians 1:19; 1Cor 9:5; John 1:12-13
C. He adopts his family through the ministry of the Holy
Spirit.

D. He adopts his family for his kingdom.

E. God demonstrates his love for his children in this.

IV. Jesus, the Father, and our family ties on earth.
A. It is because our family ties are important to us that
Jesus’ teaching amazes us.
B. Jesus teaches that our spiritual family ties ultimately
matter more than our physical family ties.
C. Since Christ graciously considers his disciples to be
close family members, let us live as brothers and sisters in our
Father’s house.
